Lucha Underground: S2E1

Season 2, Episode 1
aired: 2016/01/27

We start things off with that ending video package from Season 1, clever way to remind us of what everyone was doing.

Motherfucker, we open Season 2 with Ian Hodgkinson aka Vampiro in a NUTHOUSE, lol, he's being interviewed by a doctor about potential release (after being locked-in for 6 months) and the whole scene was simply fantastic. You think Season 1 was cinematic? It almost pales in comparison to this Vampiro scene. The makers even tricked us with that old cliche where a character snaps, only to turn out it was just his wishful thinking. And then Matt Striker is the one picking up Vampiro outside the hospital. They're going back to The Temple, "a much darker place". Sweet ride too!

Oh shit, Catrina is now in charge of everything! Her acting has improved, but it's still on porn levels of funny, and I fucking adore it. Fenix, the Gift of the Gods possessor, comes to the office and wants a shot at Mil Muertes, but Catrina books him in a match with King Cuerno first. Helluva segment! It had a lot of cliche talk and ended with a mindblowing shot of Mil Muertes sitting on his throne like a true ancient overlord and looming over The Temple. Ten stars!

Sooo, they're referring to Gift of the Gods as "championship" now. I'm not sure where I stand with that, something bugs me about it. But I'm not holding a grudge against it. Cuerno/Fenix was an excellent and truly exciting season opener. They were almost pulling out all the stops and delivered a memorable TV style match. It was intense, hard-hitting, acrobatic, but most of all it was - fun. Cuerno's signature tope was great. Fenix's crazy tornillo was even better. They were throwing puroresu-inspired blasts at each other. Excellent match with a surprising outcome.

Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico are arriving to The Temple at the same time. This should be amusing. Inside The Temple, Catrina informs them Mil wants a 3-way match between them and winner gets a shot at his title... tonight! Ivelisse sold it extremely well, her expression was spot fucking on.

Before the opening bell, we see Catrina paying a visit to Cuerno in locker room, she reminds him of the deal and Cuerno says they have nothing to worry about. Catrina literally disappears and Cuerno looks conflicted about the deal. Hmmm! Havoc/Angelico/Ivelisse was good. There weren't any stupid, over-the-top contrived or illogical moments, so great to see. They simply wrestled a catchy and rewarding sprint. Ivelisse was a fierce bitch who takes no shit from anyone, I love it. She had another moment of amazing facial expression selling after winning the match, when she was quickly reminded that she's facing Mil next, the sight of horror replacing the joy on her face was fucking priceless.

"375 miles away from Boyle Heights" we see some three random douchebags asking Black Lotus about an "underground fight club called The Temple". Ha! She says to follow her. I think this is not going to end well for the poor pricks.

Before Ivelisse/Mil could start, Catrina summons her Disciples of Death to get rid of Havoc and Angelico. The match just about everything it needed to be. They didn't work it as man-fighting-woman, they worked it as big-fighting-small, and if let's say Son of Havoc wrestled Mil instead of Ivelisse, the layout would still be the same. I'm such a sucker for tight and heavily focused short matches and this one was no exception. Mil was throwing her around like a rag doll and she was using her martial arts skills to fight back. She lost eventally, but she put on a fight. The real treasure here was post-match, with Catrina not licking Ivelisse (bummer :P) and telling Mil to annihilate her instead, but guess what - Prince Puma comes to the ring, superkicks Mil Muertes and runs away with holding Ivelisse! But wait! There's more! PENTAGON JUNIOR attacks Mil from behind and to cap it off - he breaks his arm! I am shocked, Puma is shocked, Vampiro is shocked (or is he?), the crowd is having a breakdown. Terrific television.

DARIO CUETO! He's standing outside his new Temple to greet those three dudes looking for fun. He takes 20 bucks from each to let them enter The Temple and probably get violently killed by Matanza. Oh, fuck! Perfection!
