I’ve always wanted to give this feud a proper watch, but just kept forgetting,
smh. They faced off five times mano a mano, IIRC, and I found four matches and
checked them. Can’t find the fifth one, from January 2014. Waddaya gonna do… Now,
the right thing to do would be watching two or three prelude trios before every
singles match to “get” the whole picture, but as of now I don’t feel like it,
mainly due to its time-consuming nature.
Basically,
it’s a stellar series of awesome matches. Averno’s made his career out of being
a perfect foil for young flying daredevils, and this rivalry was no different.
Every Titan is crazy, but the younger Titan was the craziest. You think Dragon Lee
is insane, better check Titan’s best shit. Dude’s a bumping machine and willing
to make huge sacrifices in the name of aerial innovation.
Their
first match is a masterpiece. Averno being a calm and collected maestro
veteran, going against the new breed of modern lucha, the match was basically
perfect, it had all the amazing storytelling and strategic elements, and quite
a lot of human chessgame, which I always love. The rematch from 13/07/09 was
also amazing, but with some recycled spots, but in lucha I always give a pass
to rematches of that sort, also the finish was stupendously good. The finish
was played off in Match Relampago and once again in their 13/12/01 title match.
They played off and made nifty comebacks on some other things as well, i.e.
armwork. 13/12/01 is a great match in itself, but as a whole it really suffers
from repetitiveness and aforementioned recycling. But overall, it’s still a
four star match, ffs. I feel like this feud did great things for Titan, not so
much for his star power (that’s another story (CMLLogic)), but much more to
legitimize him as a workhorse who always delivers excellent matches and who
loves to put his body on the line for our entertainment.
