Arena Puebla Ketchup

CMLL 2015/09/07

Molotov, Lestat, Tigre Rojo Jr. vs. Toro Bill Jr., Rey Apocalipsis, King Jaguar

Relatively fun, albeit heatless for the most of time. Bill and Apocalipsis are a fun act.

Four Rather Neat CMLL Trios

CMLL 2015/08/11

Valiente, Dragon Lee, Rey Cometa vs. Ephesto, Hechicero, Luciferno

Great match with all six guys working hard. Primera was marvelous with all the nifty matwork and eventual crazy flying (including Lee’s INSANE dive miss) that led to the tecnico win, which pissed off the rudos and hence segunda being all things dirty bar fighting. Rudos losing primera and then dishing out revenge punishment in segunda is one of my favorite things in CMLL trios. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it always works. Hechicero and Valiente were fired up. They were involved in the finish that served as a prelude to their mano a mano match one week after this. Also so good to see Cometa back!

MATCH RELAMPAGO: Rey Cometa vs. Tiger

bad

CMLL 2015/1/17

Astral vs. Pequeno Nitro

Good match between two small(er) dudes, there was some neat flashy matwork at the beginning, they did some swell dives and stuff, plus the nifty submission at the end. I’m satisfied.

Star Jr. vs. Virus

A maestro Virus singles match out of nowhere, and of course it was very good. Star Jr. is a young tecnico, so the story writes itself, we’ve seen it many times before in all the classic Virus matches. Surprisingly, Star got more offense than expected, Virus gave him a lot, but there was still a clear cut sense of Virus’ superiority. Good shit worth of watching.

Marco Corleone vs. Shocker

Very enjoyable 10 min tussle with both guys throwing a plethora of great looking punches, and that was basically everything they did, which I adored. I’m a sucker for minimalism well done. Shocker’s punches looked especially great, thankfully the ring noise was good so we could hear them landing on Marco’s face very well, swell stuff. Damn good match. I imagine a hair match between these two would be seriously great.

Campeonato Mundial Peso Medio de CMLL: Niebla Roja vs. Dragon Rojo Jr. ©

These two are probably the most generic CMLL luchadors, and it showed here. The primera was somehow interesting enough with the decent(ish) matwork, but then the segunda made no sense and the tercera was absolutely fucking terrible. No depth, no charm, no color. Fuck these two already. Horrific match.

Campeonato Mundial Completo de CMLL: Maximo vs. Terrible ©

Now, this was excellent, such a heated and exciting title match with the unexpected ending, the first two falls were really good even with the segunda being so short, but it’s all about how you do it, and they did it fine. The tercera was a real treasure here, the drama increased and the wrestling turned into a rough affair, Terrible was great with all the awesome looking punches, and Maximo was a charismatic underdog working from beneath, he did some very daredevil stuff. They did a real, primal rudo vs. tecnico battle that almost always works, I love it. The seconds were Volador and Rey Bucanero, both guys got involved but it was booked well, they didn’t insult my intelligence, they’re building towards a tag team lucha de apuesta anyway, so this match was a feud advancer that did its job. Super entertaining match with Terrible looking motivated once again and Maximo keeps proving he’s becoming a top notch luchador.

CMLL 2015/2/3

Mascara, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs. Terrible, Cavernario, Gran Guerrero

Basic and dynamic trio where the rudos worked great as a unit, judging by this Terrible and Caveman would make for a helluva tag team, they are a wild force of destruction together in the ring, Terrible was an excellent puncher once again and Caveman did his high energy things, including his best efforts in impersonating Terrible. Mascara and Terrible displayed a surprisingly promising chemistry, Delta and Maya were their usual selves, GG was fine too. Very good match.

CMLL 2015/1/27

Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa vs. Terrible, Cavernario, Mr. Aguila

Another good trio that would’ve been great with Hechicero in there instead of Aguila. Terrible was awesome once again with all the left hooks he threw across the tecnicos’ faces (poor Delta!) and Cavernario was, well, Cavernario.

Rey Cometa Apuesta Matches

CMLL 79 Aniversario

(2012/9/14)

Mascara vs. Mascara: Puma King vs. Rey Cometa

Good match that could have been so much better with a talent more suitable to Cometa’s abilities, because Puma King simply wasn’t good here. He had his moments, sure, but overall he sucked the life out of the match and just – wasn’t good. Cometa, on the other hand, was excellent in everything he did, whether it was emotion or execution, you name it. Impeccable high flying. He not only saved the match from being bad, no, he actually elevated it to the point where I can call it a good match, which means this was a totally Rey Cometa carryjob. Retrospectively, I can’t believe they had Puma going over here, because now, more than two years later, Cometa is way more appreciated and gets better spots on cards, meanwhile Puma King is still wrestling very low and if he retired tomorrow I imagine no one would miss him. So naturally, this big win they gave him seems like such a waste. Vintage CMLL!

Cabellera & Mascara vs. Cabellera & Mascara: Rey Cometa & Stuka Jr. vs. Okumura & Namajague

Fantastic match executed insanely well on every front, this was a true war of wrestling philosophies, Mexico vs. Japan, shit man, I enjoyed everything. All four guys worked hard and sold amazingly, but still I gotta give it to Namajague, dude was on fire in this one, the sequences and chemistry with Cometa were unbelievable. It was lucha high flying taking on puroresu strikes, but with both guys mixing it up and “stealing” from each other’s entities. The Japs were vicious and relentless on offense, sometimes even malicious, the tecnicos’ comebacks were paced and executed tremendously, and the climax of the match with Cometa and Namajague fighting for everything with their eliminated partners freaking out at ringside, the crowd going ballistic… Smashing shit, I’m telling ya.

CMLL 2013/4/26

Cabellera vs. Cabellera: Rey Cometa vs. Namajague

Forty days after the epic double mask/hair match, here is la revancha, Namajague is maskless and even more vicious than before, therefore Cometa is about to enter the world of pain. They proved their captivating chemistry from the previous lucha de apuesta wasn’t an accident, they fucking did it again here. Superb hair match with lots and lots of punishment, drama, crazy dives and just overall great wrestling.

CMLL 81 Aniversario

(2014/9/19)

Cabellera vs. Cabellera: Rey Cometa vs. Cavernario

I had this at ****1/2 originally, but fuck it man, I gotta bump it up now, the match is perfection, incredible star making performance by Caveman. Sure, he had some great performances and matches before, but this was that X factor moment, he delivered and got over big time on the same show that had Atlantis and Ultimo Guerrero fighting in a mask vs. mask match, just think about it. In a couple of years when he moves to WWE or something like that after being a star in Mexico, this is the match people are going to name as “career defining”. That is, of course, if he doesn’t crush his knees, and he will if he keeps performing that ultra dangerous splash to the floor. God, I hope he wears double fucking diapers around his knees.

Anyway, what a match! Yada-yada-yada… I’m spent, ****3/4 it is.

MATCH RELAMPAGO: Rey Cometa vs. Niebla Roja

Good, stiff match, they worked some mat (not bad) before hitting rough looking moves at each other, the finish was particularly awesome.

CMLL 2015/1/18

Maximo, Blue Panther, Valiente vs. Ephesto, Hechicero, Niebla Roja

Solid match highlighted by two neat Panther/Hechicero matfests and Valiente’s awesome dive from the tercera. Everything else was kind of meh, shit didn’t flow well.

CMLL 2015/1/9

MATCH RELAMPAGO: Kamaitachi vs. Dragon Lee

Killer little match carried by pure HATE these two displayed against each other, some of the blasts thrown were crazy, I’m talking about puroresu levels of intensity. Rumor has it this all leads to a mask match later this year, and oh baby, that’s going to ROCK, can’t wait.

CMLL 2015/1/13

Dragon Lee, Esfinge, Pegasso vs. Virus, Puma, Tiger

Simply awesome trio match with lots of Virus, his stuff with Pegasso and DL was nifty of course, but the best thing about the match was that literally every competitor looked good, the young guys are not afraid to work the mat and they’re quite solid at it. If CMLL does another Busca de un Idolo, I think Esfinge and Puma might break through. I’d like to see a 10 min longer rematch between these two teams, I’m sure it’d be a legit MOTYC.

CMLL 2015/1/20

Blue Panther, Titan, Dragon Rojo Jr. vs. Niebla Roja, Euforia, Hechicero

Euforia/Roja/Rojo = dull as shit. Panther/Titan/Hech = awesome.

Fun Lucharesu - Day 6

NJPW/CMLL Fantastica Mania 2015

(2015/1/19)

4.       Cavernario vs. Rey Cometa

They fucking did it again, what a grandiose match, totally on par with their hair classic from 81 Aniversario. They skipped the feeling out process and went straight to bomb throwing. Killer finish too, immensely swell stuff. The Caveman needs to be in the G1. Both guys had Korakuen going crazy. They just made names for themselves in Japan.

****1/2

5.       Polvora vs. Mistico

Good, simple match, I just wish they continued to work around Mistico’s injured leg a bit more, but oh well…

***

6.       Atlantis, Volador Jr., Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kota Ibushi vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kazuchika Okada

Super fun, light-hearted atomico where practically everyone shined, very hot crowd for this, and let me tell you something, Okada/Volador needs to happen somewhere down the road.

***3/4

7.       Mascara Dorada vs. Sombra

Spectacular high flying action movie spotfest loaded with crazy topes and ranas, but unfortunately it was still brought down by Sombra’s botches, he had at least 3-4 of them, such a shame. But still, this was a great, breathtaking match overall, Mascara Dorada was truly amazing here, simply flawless.
