Lucha Underground: S2E5

Season 2, Episode 5
aired: 2016/02/24

Previously on Lucha Underground, the beefs highlighted are Mundo/Cage and Texano/Chavo.

Vampiro and Pentagon Jr. vignette. Vampiro used shenanigans to defeat Ian Hodgkinson (something among those lines), and Pentagon must go through Catrina. "Si, Maestro!"

Damn, I really liked Jack/Black, thought it was a damn good TV sprint. Short, but loaded with good action and interesting finish. Jack is amazing, he did a self-introductionary promo and once again called himself the Dragonslayer. PJ Black looked good here, better than in the debut. Drago interfered (new Lucifer-like mask looks dandy) wanting to cost Jack the win, but it backfired on PJ instead. It looks like we're getting a Jack/Drago/Black 3-way soon that might kill it!

Johnny Mundo workout.

Famous B car sales commercial, what the fuck...

Cuerno/Killshot was really good, IMHO. They worked a vicious sprint and those two ringside superkicks looked and sounded gruesome. Killshot looking good in Season 2, which is being MVPed by King Cuerno. Awesome little match that also teased some more of Cuerno/Fenix.
The handicap match was enjoyable and once again a feud was pushed and advanced in a satisfying manner, as it all leads towards a definite Chavo/Texano clash with the latter finally winning. It's all old school and simple booking before they find something better for Texano, and I like it. This was another good match and every mini-match was different. Nice stuff.

375 miles from Boyle Heights, Matanza is still destroying fools while Dario and Lotus share a moment outside. Dario and Matanza had a crazy violent mother apparently, and Matanza saved Dario's life by killing her with that red bull. What a time to be alive!

Pentagon. Catrina. Ghost shit. Catrina can hold her own against Pentagon! Ghost shit. Pentagon/Puma II next week.

Mundo/Cage was good, but I disliked the generic run-in/distraction/foreign object ending. It could've used a bit more creativity, although I was pleasantly surprised to see Taya making her debut. I just hopes she manages to shake off the "discount Catrina" stink. Back onto the match, it was totally fine with Cage just running through Mundo with all the powerhouse spots. Mundo's athleticism always wows me. Would've been the MOTN but man, that ending took away something.

Cuerno storms into Catrina's office and says he's sick of waiting, he wants Mil for the championship, broken arm or not. Catrina's not falling for that shit and instead she books him in a GOTG Title ladder match next week. Ha! Great scene to end the action-packed episode.

Random note: Striker's commentary has been becoming increasingly and noticeably worse throughout Season 2, it's so close to his godawful levels of AAA/NJPW insanity right now. That dude needs a McMahon-on-Russo type of filter ASAP.

Episode rating: Prettay, prettay, prettay good.

  1. Jack Evans vs. PJ Black ***1/4
  2. King Cuerno vs. Killshot ***3/4
  3. 3-on-1 HANDICAP MATCH: Mr. Cisco, Cortez Castro, Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs. Texano Jr. ***1/4
  4. Johnny Mundo vs. Cage ***1/2
