New Japan in Korakuen: Do You Like a Bunch of Tags?

Road to Power Struggle 2014

(2014/10/25)

1.      Suzuki-gun (Minoru Suzuki, Takashi Iizuka, TAKA Michinoku) vs. CHAOS (Toru Yano, YOSHI-HASHI, Gedo)

Smashing opener despite the same old guys feuding, the key for success here was YOSHI-HASHI as a tremendous FIP being mauled by the relentless MiSu, and the old guy Gedo trying to pull a trick of two from his sleeve. MiSu was fucking outstanding in this match.

***3/4

2.      Bullet Club (Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, Tama Tonga) vs. Togi Makabe, Tetsuya Naito, Tomoaki Honma, Cpt. New Japan, Kota Ibushi

Bullet Club continues its superb 2014 run with all the multi-man delicacies, this was another super fun match, borderline great even.

***3/4

3.      Super Jr. Tag Tournament 2014 – Round 1: reDRagon (Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. BUSHI & Mascara Dorada

Good match until the moment they decided to fight through the venue in order for the luchadors to hit their flips from the walls and shit. It seemed so random and ruined the flow of the match. At least the finishing run was solid again.

**1/2

4.      Super Jr. Tag Tournament 2014 – Round 1: Ryusuke Taguchi & Fuego vs. Taichi & Desperado

Taguchi entered the match with a swollen ankle and it was the story of the match, as Taichi was relentless in working on it, that was good. Taguchi’s selling was excellent and made this match.

***3/4

5.      Super Jr. Tag Tournament 2014 – Round 1: Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson) vs. Jushin Liger & Tiger Mask

Don’t really know what to write here other than “damn good match”. Another one.

***3/4

6.      Super Jr. Tag Tournament 2014 – Round 1: Forever Hooligans (Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov) vs. Time Splitters (KUSHIDA & Alex Shelley)

Instead of me getting bored of them, the Hooligan’s goofy antics are growing on me, particularly Romero’s. Add Korakuen into the mix and there you go – let the funhouse ride begin! Excellent, funny, clever and suspenseful tag with the fantastic crowd, I did not see this coming, at all. What a pleasant surprise!

****1/4

7.      Hiroshi Tanahashi, Katsuyori Shibata, Hirooki Goto vs. CHAOS (Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura, Tomohiro Ishii)

Kind of by-the-numbers all-star main event, with a lot of cockiness, mind games, teasing, feud parity etc., but with the great crowd and executed tremendously. This was a sheer star power exhibition, good to see the CHAOS trio working like a well oiled machine and such a strange feeling to witness Tanahashi teaming with Goto and Shibata, the latter being a babyface is surreal. Anyway, this was a great 6-man tag that probably leads to Goto/Ishii in Osaka, which is so swell.
