Wrestling Dontaku 2015

(2015/5/3)

1.      Yuji Nagata, Jushin Liger, Tiger Mask, Mascara Dorada vs. Manabu Nakanishi, Ryusuke Taguchi, KUSHIDA, Cpt. New Japan

Really fun opener with hot crowd. Nakanishi finally didn’t look totally worthless. All the match-ups between the Juniors were awesome.

2.      Kota Ibushi & Yohei Komatsu vs. Tetsuya Naito & Sho Tanaka

Knew this would be good, and it was. Very tight and focused match, they built to Ibushi/Naito well and the Young Lions had quite a few exciting nearfalls. The crowd, unfortunately, wasn’t as hot as for the opener, but that’s the old Fukuoka story, they only react to sprints and wreckage.

3.      Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Cody Hall) vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Tomoaki Honma

Solid match with the obvious fallman, and it’s always great when HONMA scoops a win. Cody did well.

**3/4

4.      3-WAY for IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson) vs. reDRagon (Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Roppongi Vice (Rocky Romero & Beretta) ©

What a terrible goddamn match. Two pieces of shit > > > O’Reilly and Fish. This DUD felt 50 min long, I swear. One of the worst matches in recent memory. Horrendous matches such as this one almost kill my desire to watch pro-graps.

(such a) DUD

5.      IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship: Alex Shelley vs. Kenny Omega ©

Once they moved away from the silly Kenny Omega gimmick match, it got good, but not good enough to make it – good. Omega is such a sad, prime example of a great wrestler held back by a terrible persona.

**1/4

6.      Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows, Amber Gallows vs. Michael Bennett, Matt Taven, Maria Kanellis

Maria’s butt is nice, we get it. I dug the post-match, though, it saved the angle from being DUD, now it’s just bad.

bad

7.      Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Togi Makabe, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Katsuyori Shibata

Good match that highlighted and pushed all three feuds, the best match-up was Sakuraba/Shibata who brought the mean spirit of the 80s. Can’t wait for their clash!

***1/4

8.      Kazuchika Okada & YOSHI-HASHI vs. AJ Styles & Yujiro Takahashi

Just an okay Okada/Styles prelude, not bad but not memorable either.

**3/4

9.      IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Hirooki Goto vs. Shinsuke Nakamura ©

Good enough main event, I guess. The duel certainly had its problems, but in general it was a fitting match for this show. The story of Goto’s in-your-face style going against Shinsuke’s calm, methodical style was relatively well told. Could’ve been better, yes, but Fukuoka doesn’t deserve better than this. And the most important thing is – Goto finally didn’t choke!!!
